Dr. Sheema Khan gives lecture at CSIS on Muslim experience post-9/11Friday, May 12, 2006 8:06 pm
Alhamdulillah (all praise is due to God),the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) recently invited CAIR-CAN's former Chair, Dr. Sheema Khan, to give a lecture to its personnel on the experience of Canadian Muslims after 9/11. "I appreciated the opportunity to speak directly to CSIS members about the concerns of Canadian Muslims and Arabs, while also discussing ways in which we can become partners in security. Canadian Muslims and Arabs should be seen as part of the solution, not part of the problem," says Dr. Khan. "It is important for security services and citizens to continue dialogue in order to forge a common front against terrorism." "Dr. Khan's thought-provoking presentation has helped Service employees to better understand the perspective of Canada's diverse and growing Muslim community regarding the world after 9-11," said John Dunn, Director General of Communications for CSIS. "The cultural landscape of Canada is changing rapidly. CSIS wants to build bridges with all communities in this new Canada so it can better protect all our citizens." Dr. Khan was invited to speak to intelligence officers and other employees at the CSIS headquarters on April 11, 2006. Her speech, entitled "Partners in Security," covered such things as existing challenges in relations between Canadian Muslims and security services and related national security issues that may arise in the future. Her lecture was followed by a frank and open discussion on the issue with the full audience. The current initiatives in creating dialogue are an important part of ensuring the safety of our country," says Karl Nickner, CAIR-CAN's Executive Director. Several of CAIR-CAN's board members also participate in other forums aimed at providing cultural and spiritual literacy training, such as an RCMP diversity advisory committee in Winnipeg as well as other social planning and civic committees across the country. CAIR-CAN is also participating in the RCMP's National Security Community Advisory Committee in Ottawa, which brings together members of the RCMP, CSIS and the Ottawa Muslim community to discuss issues of concern. |
